Amino Acids are the basic units of proteins and important organic molecules in living organisms. The amino acid structure consists of an amino group (NH2), a carboxyl group (COOH), a hydrogen atom, and a side chain group. The side chain groups of amino acids determine the difference between different amino acids, allowing them to perform different functions in the body.

The human body needs 20 amino acids to make proteins, nine of which are essential amino acids that the body cannot make on its own and must be consumed through food. These nine essential amino acids include lysine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, and threonine.

Amino acids have many important functions in the human body, including building proteins, regulating metabolism, maintaining immune system health, and participating in nerve conduction. Therefore, maintaining adequate amino acid intake is essential for human health.

Amino Acids Introduce

Amino acids, as fundamental building blocks of life, are amphipathic organic compounds integrating both basic amino and acidic carboxyl groups, forming the elementary units of biofunctional macromolecules, proteins.
Broadly classified, amino acids fall into two categories: proteinogenic amino acids and non-proteinogenic amino acids. Proteinogenic amino acids, also known as standard amino acids, directly participate in protein biosynthesis. Based on the varying placement of the amino group along the carbon chain, they are classified into α-, β-, γ-, etc., types, with natural proteins in biology exclusively composed of α-amino acids, totaling 22, including 20 common and 2 rare ones. Non-proteinogenic amino acids, however, do not directly engage in protein assembly but require modification to be incorporated, exemplified by citrulline, ornithine, and hydroxyproline.
Amino acids exhibit diverse properties, influenced by their structures and R groups, such as distinct isoelectric points and optical rotations, which facilitate their identification and analysis. Currently, a myriad of analytical techniques has been developed for amino acid detection, including spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, among others.
In living organisms, amino acids serve as vital precursors for the synthesis of antibodies, hemoglobin, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and can even act as energy sources. They embody the essence of all life, truly the elemental source of existence.
